Counsellors Must Know That They Are Not God.

Counselors must learn in a counselling situation to look out for certain signals to know if they are going to a dead end or an highway into the future. Signs of a dead end are basically two:

  1. When the counsellee keeps attempting to generalise his/her peculiar situation. This happens when someone thinks everyone is in his kind of situation. There are actually two ranges in our social spheres:
  • The micro world, where individuals have their personal problems or prospects in their own personal situation.

  • The macro-world or the wider society where everything happens at the same time and in the same way to everyone in the society.

When personal experiences are interpreted as the issues in the wider society, change will never take place in that personal experience until he thinks differently.

  1. When the counselled has his/her mind made up on maintaining practices that possibly contributed to the existing problem. You had a 1st class from university and alongside that have a very bad personal culture. You are are counselled to look into your dress culture but you insist that the 1st class makes the difference. A counsellor should be able to see why no one would give that persons a job. If he is not willing to change, you may not be able to help him beyond remembering him in prayers for the Lord to tough the heart and help the person to see..

Willingness to use the help you offer is a sign of prospect in counselling. This doesn’t mean that the person being counselled cannot ask question or come up with some disputations. Intellectual engagement might be necessary.

But when the heart is stubbornly made up, you may need to check with the Holy Spirit in your heart to know if you should continue. The Apostle Paul had to depart certain locations, shaking the dust of the place of his sandals; He also was instructed by the Lord not to leave Corinth, as there were prospects there despite the disputations.

Even if you attempt to ‘cast spirits out’ of someone who is not ready to change his mind, they soon will find their ways back into him, since by his way of thinking there is a ready stage or foothold for them in such a life.

The mind that is not ready to change is one that you mAy not be able to help.

Counsel to let someone see what might be working against him. If he is not ready to agree, courteously let him go and spent your time on more profitable situations.

Jesus was only able to change those who used his teachings when he was here. He could not help everyone because of their unbelief – disagreement with the words He shared with them.

RESPONSIBILITY AND COOPERATION FOR KINGDOM FULFILMENT

… most of the things that God will do in your life … will be … by responsible collaboration

For every blessing that God has for you he puts on you the responsibility to appropriate it. It is the Lord’s business to make a promise and provision, it is your responsibility to take possession of what is meant for you. To take possession of it means it must be your desire to possess what God has for you. Desire expresses itself in faith, in prayer and in corresponding action. God will not give anyone what he has no desire for or what he takes no action for. Don’t forget that the action is to possess and not to provide

For most of the things that God will do in your life, they will be accomplished by collaboration. The operation of the Holy Spirit in your life, for instance is collaborative. He does not usurp your responsibility; He rather works with you – Jn 15:26 (Acts 5:32). What about ‘the spirit himself makes intercession for us’ according to Rom 8:26? Well, the Spirit makes intercession for us because of our weaknesses.

As we patiently hope for the things which God has for us, groaning in ourselves for them, the Holy Spirit also helps our weaknesses (the general weaknesses of our present life) which limit us even as we groan in ourselves. The scripture indicates that when we pray, we do not know what we should pray for as we ought to (possibly a problem of limited expression). He helps our weaknesses by taking hold of opposite together with us. He lays hold along with us, he strives to obtain with us what we long for with groaning that cannot be expressed in human words.

Just as it is with the Holy Spirit, the role of others in your lives is not to usurp your responsibility but to cooperate with you over what you are take responsibility for. They take hold together with you, walk together with you over your desires that you can do something about or at times nothing much about. Your responsibility is however primary. There must be a desire and an action, unless you are in a state of total incapability which is an extreme – Jn 11:1-2; Jam 5:16. Some who have refused to do something (even if little) about their predicament have been found to be incapable of receiving the help because of lack of desire or unwillingness to use the change that time offers them.

You may wonder about cases like that of Dorcas in Acts 9:36-43 and Peter in Acts 12:1-19. Theirs, I observe, were extreme or near extreme cases, wherein others had to fight for their cause. The values they have added to others was the reason why those people did not let go of them. The intervention of others in those two cases was not about merely securing an extension of existence for them, it was more for the roles they were fulfilling. For them to live was Christ.

Never pass the buck of your life to another, for the change starts with you. It is time to take responsibility away from lying vanity of who shall do it for you. Jon 2:8. Get ready to cross the Jordan for yourself. You cannot sit still where you are and expect to have the experience across the Jordan. Until you get to your destination a protracted stopping over might be a tool for vulnerability.

OUT OF ZION 019 | THE NEED TO BREAK THE TREND

“… ‘Prepare provisions for yourselves, for within three days you will cross over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’” Josh 1:11

Change is a breaking off with the trend to produce the future.

The charge last week pointed to the need for change. Change is an act or process through which something becomes different; it is the substitution of one thing for another. The order in life is the process of making things different as nothing is meant to be static. If life itself is a process of change, how much more should the experience in life be. Change is the process of one thing giving way for another either through a process of alteration or modification of the existing or by the introduction of a completely new or refreshingly different experience. It is the transition of the living from one phase of its life to another 2 Cor. 3:18

Change is important if your Jordan will be crossed. Do not forget that Jordan signifies the obvious barrier between you and your promise. The instruction given to the Israelites to make provisions for themselves has to do with making preparations, adjustments, changes that will leave the past behind for them to cross over into the promise. Last week I shared with you that to cross the Jordan, you will need to move; make preparation for new things; pursue the real essence of your person or of your existence – which in actual sense is truly ahead; and adjust so as not to fall behind.

My emphasis this week is on the application of the process of change as seen in the biblical significance of three days. Whatever the current issue is with you, if you can bury this person that you are gratifying, you will see a brand new you coming out. There are different levels of experience with God that you may have not even imagine the one awaiting you yet. Israel was to get ready to cross over Jordan in three days. Three days will be enough to evolve a new and ready people if they will go through the process.

Change is a breaking off with the trend to produce the future. Trend has never produced the future, change does. For every system built by man, a pattern of action or existence is only established. Have you noted that such patterns are always broken either by update or by transition to another? Have you noticed that, even in the normal human society, change is birthed when trend is broken?

Everything in life would be monotonous and boring if change is not permitted. If the society would use change even when it has no goal just to kill boredom how much more when there is a future requiring a change. You need a change to get a different result. It is only the fools that continue with the same thing while expecting a different result.

Change happens when you have become tired of the trend or the status quo. No trend is broken until it has reached its climax. The climax of a trend does not come until the trend has saturated the ecosystem. Trend is only broken when you have had enough of it or when you begin to see a problem with it.

In spiritual matters, God steps in to instruct or direct with imperatives when you are not realising that the time for change has set in. He spoke to Joshua emphatically and by extension to Israel when the season for change rolled in. Israel by implication was told to get ready and make provision for what was ahead, for in three days something new should begin. Trend will be broken when the process of change is engaged.

OUT OF ZION 018 | ARE YOU READY TO CROSS YOUR JORDAN?

OUT OF ZION 018 | ARE YOU READY TO CROSS YOUR JORDAN?

… ‘Prepare provisions for yourselves, for within three days you will cross over this Jordan ….’ ” Josh 1:11

… make all the needed changes … to cross over the main issue between you and the next phase

Obedience is needed to experience the next phase of your life. You cannot sit still where you are and be expecting miracle to take place. Obedience is more than that done in the past, it is attending to the current instruction and avoiding alternative sacrifices to the biddings of God (1 Sam 15:22-23). You cannot afford to be sitting still after hearing from God. The leadership was instructing these people to get ready to cross Jordan. This is valuable for everyone in line with the next thing God wants to do. Just as it was for this people, provision has to be made for the next phase.

  1. It is time to move.

These people have been camping for a while to rest from their journey and possibly from their last military campaign and victory. Rest is part of God’s instruction and provision for the good of the human race (Gen 2:1-3; Mark 2:27). Though their camping was necessary, it was time again to break the camp and move on. Those in transit do not abide permanently at their stopover. For many of these people, they were possibly not set to move. Give them a choice, they will dangerously fold their arms a little bit more (Pro 6:10). While rest is not bad, redeeming the time is equally important. To convince yourself that you are where you should be will be a grave injustice to yourself and to the plan of God. It is time to move

  1. It is time to make provision for yourselves

It is time to make provision for what shall be needed as we break the camp to cross over. What are those things that will be needed to fulfil the next phase in the instruction that you have received? What are those things that you will need to do to get a different and a better result? You will need to do more of those things that have worked for you in the past and do better things that are essential for the future.

  1. It is time to pursue the real you

Can’t I just be myself is a question people ask in situations like this. The question is, who is the self that you are claiming to be? The self that needs to be reoriented? The self that needs to be buried to make provision for a better or a brand new you? The self that hasn’t been able to go beyond here and now? It is an injustice to God and to the true you to emphasise the self that was or that is. You are not in the past and more that this one here; you are that true self that must come out of this for the future (Phil 3:12). A grain of corn is a potential and not a full existence or it would amount to a waste. Jesus was the son of man that was meant to be the saviour of the world. To accomplish that, he had to look for the joy that was set before Him (Heb. 12:2). Stop just being yourself, pursue to realise your true self which God has set before the current you.

  1. It is time not to fall behind

Get ready to move with the company that God sets you in. Can you imagine any of them at this time desiring to stay back for a while more. This is what happens when people claim to be part of a team or a group but fail to align themselves with the system. They do not know that progress means sacrifice and lots of inconvenience. It takes lots of this to break to the next level personally and corporately. Get ready to change and get ready for more corporate participation. What is my identity and what is the unique value that I am adding? What vital contribution am I getting ready for? Without all these, I may be thinking that I am a part of a team while I am not. This is how people miss it before they get left behind or shortlisted for a sack. It is time to prove that you are a part of the community that God set you in to avoid being left behind.

You need to make all the needed changes now so as to cross over the main issue between you and the next manifestation of God in your life.
