In many churches, ministry is judged by what happens through the most visible leader. If the pastor preaches well, visits the sick, settles disputes, trains workers, leads meetings, and keeps every programme moving, people call the ministry strong.

That arrangement may look impressive for a while. It may also leave the congregation dependent, the leader exhausted, and gifted believers unsure of what they are meant to contribute.

Ephesians 4 gives us a healthier picture.

Paul begins by saying that grace has been given to each believer as Christ has apportioned it. He then explains that Christ gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers “to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up” (Ephesians 4:12).

The direction is clear. Leaders equip. God’s people serve. The body grows.

This does not reduce the importance of Christian leadership. It tells us what leadership is for.

Ministry Was Never Meant to Remain in a Few Hands

Equipping people is demanding work. It requires sound teaching, patient correction, careful listening, and the willingness to stay near people while they learn. A leader must notice emerging gifts, open appropriate opportunities, give honest feedback, and allow others to grow through practice.

Doing the work personally can feel faster. Training someone else is often slower at first. Questions interrupt the process. Mistakes have to be corrected. Responsibilities that once felt predictable become less tidy.

Still, the goal of Christian leadership is larger than efficient performance. Christ intends His people to become mature and useful in His service.

A church may gather around a gifted preacher and remain weak as a body. People can admire ministry without learning to minister. They can receive years of teaching while depending on someone else to do all the praying, discerning, encouraging, and serving.

That is not the maturity Paul describes.

The ascended Christ gives grace “to each one.” No believer possesses every gift, but no believer should be treated as though he or she has nothing to offer. The work belongs to Christ, and He distributes grace across His body.

Equipping Is More Than Giving Instructions

An announcement asking for volunteers is not the same as equipping. Neither is placing an inexperienced person in a role and hoping for the best.

People need to understand why the work matters. They need biblical grounding, practical preparation, clear expectations, and support after they begin. They also need leaders who care about their character more than their usefulness.

Someone can become skilled at a church task while remaining proud, impatient, unreliable, or difficult to correct. Christian equipping must therefore reach further than competence. It helps people grow in truth, character, love, and service.

This kind of leadership does not use people to keep programmes alive. It serves people so that they can take their place in the life and mission of Christ’s body.

Healthy Leaders Make Room for Growth

Some leaders struggle to release responsibility because they fear that quality will fall. Others have built their identity around being needed. If someone else can teach, organise, lead, or solve problems, they wonder where that leaves them.

But a leader has not become unnecessary when others learn to serve. That growth is part of the leader’s work bearing fruit.

Paul did not measure ministry by how many people remained dependent on him. He entrusted the gospel to Timothy and expected Timothy to entrust it to reliable people who could teach others. The work continued because responsibility was shared faithfully.

This does not mean handing every responsibility to anyone who expresses interest. Scripture joins gifting with character, truth, and reliability. Wise leaders discern readiness. They protect people and the church from responsibilities for which someone is not prepared.

Yet discernment must not become an excuse for control. People cannot become ready for meaningful service if they are never taught, trusted, or given room to practise.

A Better Question for Church Leadership

Leaders often ask, “How much ministry are we accomplishing?” Ephesians 4 adds another question: “Are God’s people becoming equipped to serve?”

That question changes what success looks like.

Success includes believers who understand Scripture more clearly, recognise their gifts, carry responsibility, and help others grow. It includes ministries that can continue when one person is absent. It includes emerging servants who are teachable, dependable, and rooted in Christ rather than attached to a personality.

The strongest leader in the room does not have to be the person doing everything. Christian leadership becomes fruitful when the whole body is learning to do its work in love.

If you lead, identify one responsibility that someone else could begin learning. Explain the purpose. Let the person observe. Give a genuine opportunity to participate. Offer correction without humiliation. Stay available.

And if you have become comfortable receiving ministry without serving, do not wait for a title. Ask where your grace, experience, and presence can strengthen the body.

Christ gives leaders to equip His people. He gives grace to every member. The Church is built up when both accept their calling.
