Some Bible verses become dangerous when the wrong person places himself at the centre of them.

“We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty” is one of those verses (Luke 17:10, NIV).

Jesus used it to confront disciples who might imagine that obedience gave them a claim upon God. A leader can misuse the same words to keep tired people working, discourage honest questions, or excuse a culture that rarely says thank you.

That is not a faithful reading of Luke 17.

A pastor, ministry leader, employer, spouse, or parent cannot claim the master’s place in the parable and use Jesus’ words to demand limitless service from someone else. The passage addresses our posture before God. It does not make human authorities divine.

Jesus Is Describing Our Relation to God

The setting matters. Jesus has told His disciples to resist causing others to stumble, confront sin, and practise repeated forgiveness. The apostles recognize the difficulty and ask for greater faith. Jesus then tells a brief story about a servant who completes the work expected of him.

The closing words are directed to the disciples: “So you also.” They must see themselves as servants before God. Costly obedience does not place the Lord in their debt.

Jesus is not giving earthly leaders a management strategy. He is dealing with spiritual pride.

That distinction changes everything. The moment a leader uses this text to say, “You are an unworthy servant, so your exhaustion does not matter,” the leader has quietly stepped into God’s position. The parable has been turned away from its intended target.

“Unworthy” Is Not a Statement of Human Worthlessness

The word can sound as though Jesus is stripping His followers of value. That interpretation clashes with how He treated people.

Jesus welcomed those society dismissed. He touched people others avoided. He gave His life as a ransom for many. Elsewhere, He tells His disciples, “I have called you friends” (John 15:15). Paul writes that believers receive the Spirit of adoption and know they are God’s children (Romans 8:15–16).

Grace does not humiliate people. It gives them a place they could never secure for themselves.

In Luke 17, “unworthy” describes the servant’s lack of leverage. We cannot make God dependent upon our contribution. Our obedience adds nothing to His sufficiency and leaves us with no invoice to present.

That is very different from saying a person has no dignity, no limits, or no right to be treated with care.

Christian Community Must Still Practise Gratitude

The New Testament calls believers to honour one another, encourage the weary, share burdens, and recognize faithful labour. Those commands do not compete with Luke 17. They tell us how a grace-formed community treats its members.

A church should notice the people who arrive early, care for children, prepare music, organize records, clean rooms, visit the sick, pray quietly, and carry the details that make shared ministry possible. Leaders should express gratitude before dependable service becomes invisible through familiarity.

People should not have to threaten resignation before anyone asks whether they are tired.

Recognition cannot become the reason we obey Christ. Even so, gratitude remains one way the body cares for its members. A community that preaches hidden service while publicly celebrating only a few visible people has not yet understood its own message.

Faithfulness Has Boundaries

Human beings have limits. Christian maturity does not remove them.

Jesus rested. He withdrew to pray. He invited His disciples to come away after an intense period of ministry. The apostle Paul depended upon coworkers and received practical support from churches.

A culture that glorifies exhaustion can sound spiritual while behaving irresponsibly. Constant overwork is not proof of devotion. Sometimes a person needs to continue. Sometimes the faithful choice is to ask for help, decline another task, train a replacement, or take a season of rest.

Boundaries can be selfish, of course. They can also protect health, family responsibilities, and long-term usefulness. Wisdom lies in discerning the difference without shaming people for being human.

Leaders carry a particular responsibility here. They should share the load, provide realistic expectations, respond to signs of depletion, and make accountability possible. “Sacrifice” must never become a word leaders use for costs they expect everyone else to bear.

The Verse Confronts Leaders Too

Luke 17:10 applies to the person behind the pulpit as surely as it applies to the person stacking chairs.

No leader’s sacrifice makes God his debtor. Years of ministry do not exempt a leader from correction. A growing church does not become a pastor’s private possession. Spiritual gifts do not place their bearer above accountability.

Leaders also say, “We have only done our duty.”

That confession should produce gentleness, not entitlement. Whatever good has been accomplished came through strength God supplied and through the labour of people whose names may never appear on a programme.

Healthy leaders remember this. They share credit. They listen when people are strained. They refuse to convert another person’s loyalty into permanent access to that person’s time and energy.

Read the Passage in the Light of Grace

Luke 17 cuts through our attempts to bargain with God. It tells every disciple that obedience flows from belonging to Christ. It does not tell human authorities to become harsh masters.

The church must hold both truths together. We serve without demanding that recognition become our reward. We also build communities where faithful people are seen, supported, and allowed to rest.

When the verse is read well, pride loses its claim and exploitation loses its excuse.

Christ remains Lord. Everyone else remains accountable to Him.
