Defeat Your Past By facing The Future 3

The Lord just instructed the people to camp at Pi Hahiroth. a camp is a place of temporary accommodation typically used by traveling people. When you are in transit, you will dwell in camps. Each camp represents the completion of a stretch in your journey, while every breaking of the camp indicates another phase or move of God in your life’s journey.

Could God be asking you to camp now?

Camping sure has its advantages: it is for rest; for contemplative worship and for guidance. Before God would ask the Israelites to camp, He knew what was likely. Pharaoh had released the people but he was still thinking about them, Ex 14:5.

It is difficult for the predator to let go, for your bondage is a gratification to his oppressive enterprise. Everyone in bondage renders services to the predator. The past that you have escaped will still attempt to come up after you, especially when there is still a connection to it within your mind.

How do we know that there was still a connection between Israel and Egypt? Just listen to what they said when the past came up on their heels (Ex 14:10-12): They were afraid; they would have preferred to die in Egypt; they would have preferred to be left alone in Egypt; they would have preferred to serve the Egyptians.

The past will rage, but there is a way to handle it. Look within you today. Do a sincere check. You may need to take time out for a practical purging routine to rid yourself of the preoccupation with the past through prayer; meditation on the word/promise and a contemplation about the destination ahead.

And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God broought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstreched arm …. Deut 5:15

Bible Reading: Ex 14:1-31

If you truly recognize the Lord and maintain a walk with him, you will admit that every past you exit, like Israel coming out of Egypt, is the work of His grace. Ex 12:40-41, 50-51.

You will so admit, especially when that past has exercised a strong hold on you; you will, when your struggles and efforts met with a brickwall that plunges you into a state of despondency, low spirit, or dejection as a result of loss of hope; you will, because when it seemed all hope was gone, heaven felt your pulse and responded to your cry; worked out some clear intervention to effect your release or exit.

You will admit it was grace because it wasn’t ordinary. What happened can only be the expression of the almightiness of God. The storm ceased, the wind subsided, everything was calm and the only dynamics was your exit.

The predator that said you will neither get out of the rut nor move forward had gone quiet. This was the doing of the Lord, marvelous in your sight.

You can defeat the past practically when you celebrate the grace of God which delivered you from it, if not, you will dwell on the troubles than on the victory, making yourself susceptible to the troubles from the past.

Never, ever, forget His benefits.

You need the memories of the working of His grace from the past to to face the future successful.

The past can haunt when the future is being pursued, Ex 14:1-9. People are often mindful of the past unconsciously. They call it the past but it is not really in the past as they still accommodate it in their mind.

The past can however be put to where it belongs permanently. Everyone needs to do this. If the past is not put where it belongs, the future is blurred each time that past is entertained. Abraham and the patriarchs were safe in respect of their vision and the future because they stopped minding the past, Heb 11:14-16. Little wonder then, that for them, there was no return to the past.

Finders are Losers while Losers are Finders

The business of the church is to be busy with the commission given her by the Christ. The present concern and occupation with self organized and campaign for protection can’t be spiritual. I doubt if that fits into WWJD (what would Jesus do?) considering the context in Matt 16:22-27.

Peter rebuked him and gave a “prophetic word” of that shall not be your portion, when christ spoke of the challenge awaiting him.

His response to Peter: “Get behind Me satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

He that loves his life will loose it, he that looses it will find it.

I taught my sons early enough to remember from the words of Christ that finders are losers while losers are finders (Matt 16:25).

I think the church is concerned with the extinction of a religion and how to organize its safety. A religion may go into extinction but not the way. The Christian faith is not a religion; it can’t go into extinction. The history of the church was punctuated with various assaults like the ones being witnessed now globally. The church only gets stronger against the assaults of the gates of hell.

We are His concern (Acts 9:4-5), any attempt against us is one against Him; His work and desires are our concern, He asked us to occupy till He comes. That charge cannot be carried out with self pity and appetite for security.

These are part of the signs of the times. Political calculations and organizational planning cannot change them.

If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

I understand why we are wrongly concerned.

A pastor once told me he dislikes the hymn with the lines: I’ll be a good soldier, I’ll die at my post.” For Him it is not spiritual being negative confession.

I was scared! With this type of thinking we will see more of mixing the preaching of the gospel with political and organized fight for protection.

Let us discern the sign of the times!
